SELF-CLEANING

Keep your home looking beautiful

Make a clean break

A self-cleaning surface

How it works

Our Emperor super hydrophobic technology causes water to form beads on the surface as they cannot attach to it. These beads as they roll off the surface gather any dirt, ensuring the surface stays clean and free from contamination.

Peace of mind

There is nothing worse than putting hours of hard work into transforming a space for it to look less than its best just a few months later, which can be the case if you use a standard masonry paint or exterior coating. By using our products, you can ensure your handy work can be enjoyed for years to come. This also means you can pick the colour of your choice without worrying whether it will stand the test of time, which puts many off using white. Our self-cleaning technology keeps masonry of any colour looking bright and beautiful no matter what is thrown at it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the self-cleaning properties prevent any dirt attaching to the surface?

The self-cleaning properties make it very difficult for dirt to attach to the surface. If any dirt does attach, this can be easily washed away using a hose-pipe as it won’t be able to strongly adhere to the super hydrophobic surface created by our products.

Do I remove organic growth before application?

Yes, while our products help reduce the risk of organic growth, they are not designed to be applied over the top of organic growth. Cleaning is a two step process. Firstly, wash the surfaces down with a pressure washer (on a low pressure setting), hose-pipe or a stiff brush and hot water. Once dry apply Emperor Masonry Cleaner where there are problems with organic growth. This contains a fungicide which kills any fungus, ensuring it cannot continue to bloom once treated. Simply apply the cleaner to the wall using a brush, roller or pump-sprayer and allow this to dry for 2-3 hours at 20°C.

Are all Emperor Paint products self-cleaning?

Absolutely, Emperor Masonry Paint, Emperor Masonry Creme and Emperor Wood Waterproofer all contain our super hydrophobic technology meaning they are all self-cleaning.

Are Emperor Paint products affected by UV?

All of our products are UV resistant, meaning they will not fade or discolour over-time due to exposure to the sun. This is crucial especially for Emperor Masonry Paint, as this prevents the loss of colour that many masonry paints can suffer from, providing the product with excellent colour fastness in all weather conditions.

Are Emperor Paint products as effective as external wall insulation?

Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme have been tested to the same level as any external wall insulation must be tested to, in order to prove it is an external insulating system (EAD 040083-00-0404 – External thermal insulation composite).

All properties can experience benefits in thermal performance, the level of which depends on the property. Our masonry products are highly recommended for use on properties with cavity wall insulation in order to ensure the insulation stays dry and thus can perform at its best.

Does this benefit properties with a cavity wall construction or solid wall construction?

The amount of money you can save depends on the type of construction you have. There are two broad forms of construction; solid walls, which as the name would suggest, consist of one singular wall all the way through, and cavity walls, consisting of two layers of wall that have a ‘cavity’ or ‘gap’ in the middle.

With solid walls, there is nothing preventing moisture from transferring from the external wall into the internal wall. This can allow them to become highly saturated and particularly prone to heat loss and poor energy efficiency. Properties with cavity walls prevent this bridge of moisture, allowing them to release water more effectively, although they can still suffer from heat loss due to saturated exterior walls.

Cavity walls that have been installed with poorly fitted cavity wall insulation can also be prone to heat loss, as this insulation can absorb moisture like a sponge, causing it to lose thermal performance.
